Flu Vaccination Winter Rollout Starting 7th October 2024 :
The flu vaccine is a safe and effective way to protect your self from the winter flu virus. It is available yearly from October until April, to anyone over 2 years of age. The best time to get the flu vaccine is before the flu season starts. For adults the flu vaccine is given as an injection in your arm.
How much does the flu vaccine cost?
The flu vaccine is FREE to anyone who meets the following criteria outlined by the HSE. Everyone else will have to pay a private clinic fee of €35 for the Flu Vaccine.
Who can get the FREE Flu vaccination?
The flu vaccination is FREE to anyone who meets the following criteria as set out by the HSE. You are eligible for the FREE flu vaccine if you are:
- Aged 60 yrs and older
- A child aged 2 to 17 yrs
- A Healthcare worker
- A Pregnant woman at any stage of pregnancy.
- Living in a nursing home or other long-term care facility
- In regular contact with pigs, poultry or waterfowl
- Someone with a health condition that puts you at higher risk of flu (age 6 months and older)
- Living with someone who has a health condition that puts them at higher risk of flu
- A carer for someone who has a health condition that puts them at higher risk of flu
Side effects
After the vaccine, you may have some mild side effects.

If you have any of these side effects, rest and take paracetamol.
Serious side effects
Serious side effects such as a severe allergic reaction are rare.
In very rare cases Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) has been reported. GBS is a condition that affects the nerves in the body. It causes nerve inflammation and can cause pain, numbness, muscle weakness and difficulty walking. You are far more likely to get Guillain-Barré syndrome from having the flu than from the flu vaccine.
If you do not fulfill the criteria listed above, and you are not eligible for a FREE flu vaccine, you can still get the flu vaccine but you will need to pay for it.
